Duration: Aug 18th-Sep 4th Role: Sole UX/UI Designer
I started this project of Disco Esports at around the time I was more comfortable with UX/UI design. I envisioned an app that could be able to bring together gaming, a popular form of recreation and create an organization to host and play esports.
To tackle this project, I asked esports enthusiasts, non-players and players alike, where they all gave input on how I could make this app be beneficial for users. The main points I was presented with were the benefit of the app for users, namely how this app would help the esports organization grow and foster a community. Specifically, potential users asked for a calendar for scrimmages, and for the app to include everything about the organization in one package.
In order to properly prepare for the design, I created user personas, journey maps, empathy maps, and problem statements. This research allowed me to further gain the insights of my users, (potential project managers), and map out the problem at hand I'm trying to solve.
A competitive audit and a review of feedback from their users revealed 3 major pain points of users.
Overall, with most companies, there were complaints by users that content was presented in a non-cohesive way. Users argued that the app should have content that is presented in a way that users can easily find what they want.
There were a decent amount of claims stating that companies had their features all over the place, and users would have to move to different places to view content from the certain company.
Users argued that the way content was structured was unorganized and that the most used features were not easily accessible.
After all of the preparation, it was time for me to continue onto the real challenge of designing and redesigning. Multiple iterations of the project were used in order to get the proper rough format. Please keep in mind that the app is not finished, and multiple revisions have been made and will continue to be made.
Different iterations of paper prototypes were not used in the final product. The project started out with making paper prototypes keeping user persona features in mind. This was eventually transferred to digital and tweaked to eventually conduct a usability study on the product.
Although there is not any specific records, there were many design changes that occurred throughout the duration of the project. Most notable though, is the usability study that was conducted, showing key errors that could be improved on.
Problem: Overall, users reported that design elements across the page were inconsistent with others. Certain pages were hard to
Solution: Design elements in the app were changed to be consistent
Problem: Users also reported the typography was sometimes inconsistent with certain elements that were supposed to be the same.
Solution: This problem was easily fixed by making designs consistent.
Keeping these ideas in mind, the final product was finally created after much more iterations and tweaking.
Overall, I believe the project has made me a better UX/UI designer and overall better at managing a project. I had to learn how to design a lot of new elements for this project, so seeing the fruition of my work was something really special. I see this project as a stepping stone to further my UX/UI design career, and I am happy that I was able to make this project a success.
